Lucien De Gheus °1927, the youngest of three children in the family Maurice De Gheus – Deraedt Pharaïlde, grows up in Poperinge with his elder brother Jules (sister Ivonne dies at the age of three). His father is a shoemaker and war invalid (gas victim), his mother a housewife. Young Lucien goes to school in his home town without much enthousiasm, but in his spare time he takes a drawing course at the Poperinge Academy. He also plays the trumpet and his father wants him to follow in the footsteps of brother Jules, a professional trombone player. In 1940 he ‘s enrolled in the music academy of Ypers, but the war alters this plan, and to his satisfaction, during the war years, Lucien De Gheus can dedicate himself to drawing, painting and clay modelling. However, his interest in music will last a lifetime.
